What is mould?

Mould is a microscopic organism of the fungi family (that includes mushrooms) that can grow anywhere, outdoors or indoors, and on materials such as walls, bathroom tiles, carpets, foods, wood, ceiling, plumbing, paper and clothes. They like to grow in damp and poorly ventilated spaces indoors or outdoors.

How does mould grow?

Mould needs water, nutrients, poor ventilation, ideal temperatures and sometimes darkness to grow. As a result, food rich in water makes an ideal place for mould to grow. Mould is transported through the air and not harmful to us in moderation. Once it lands on a surface and under the right conditions, such as an untouched piece of bread at room temperature, it can grow really fast and become visible, from 24 hrs to weeks.

How to remove mould from clothes?

If your clothes are not too badly damaged by mould, you can remove mould and clean them using household products, such as vinegar, baking soda, borax or even bleach. Most of them work best diluted in warm, hot water. If you are using bleach, be careful to avoid mixing with any other products as commercial bleaching detergents are already ready to use and always check the cloth care tag beforehand.
